What is Vestibular Function Testing (VNG Testing)?

Vestibular Function Testing, commonly known as Videonystagmography (VNG) testing, is a comprehensive assessment used to evaluate the function of your inner ear and its connection to your brain. This test is essential for diagnosing the root causes of dizziness and other vestibular-related symptoms.

Why is VNG Testing Important?

Dizziness and balance problems can stem from various sources, including inner ear disorders, neurological conditions, or other medical issues. VNG testing helps pinpoint the exact cause of your symptoms, allowing for targeted and effective treatment plans.

What to Expect During a VNG Test

  1. Initial Consultation:
    • Our specialist will discuss your symptoms, medical history, and any previous evaluations or treatments.
  2. Preparation:
    • You’ll be asked to refrain from certain medications, alcohol, and caffeine for a specified period before the test to ensure accurate results.
  3. The Testing Process:
    • The VNG test consists of several components, each designed to assess different aspects of your vestibular system:
      • Ocular Motor Testing: You’ll follow visual targets with your eyes to evaluate how well your eye movements are controlled.
      • Positional Testing: Your head and body will be moved into different positions to check for abnormal eye movements that may indicate a vestibular disorder.
      • Video Head Impulse Test (vHIT): This test involves wearing lightweight goggles that measure your eye movements while your head is moved rapidly in different directions. It helps assess the function of the semicircular canals in your inner ear, which are crucial for maintaining balance.
  4. Duration:
    • The entire VNG testing procedure typically takes about 60 minutes.

After the Test

Once the VNG test is complete, our specialist will analyze the results and discuss their findings with you. Based on the results, a personalized treatment plan will be developed to address your specific condition.

Common Conditions Diagnosed with VNG Testing:

  • Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
  • Meniere’s Disease
  • Vestibular Neuritis
  • Labyrinthitis
  • Central Vestibular Disorders
